Resurrection Lake Poem Resurrected

Resurrection Lake, a poem about Clevedon’s Marine Lake, which once adorned a tile plaque there, has been resurrected, thanks to a major team effort.

The original, designed by artist Nancy Farmer to display the evocative words of poet Bernie Simmons and unveiled in 2020 by the Marlens lake charity, was shattered in a major storm in 2024 and was thought to have been lost for ever.

But Unique Tiles of Wincanton agreed to re-make the tiles, builder Denbigh Mudge of DJM Plastering made a new concrete base and tiler Lee Perrott relaid the plaque, all providing their work free of charge, and even the tile adhesive and all-weather grout were provided at a bargain price by Topps Tiles of Clevedon.

The new plaque was officially unveiled by Marlens chair Sarah Swash on August 15 at a ceremony attended by all concerned, including the artist and poet.

Sarah said: “I’m delighted to unveil this new plaque at Clevedon Marine Lake – much loved and used by the local community.

“I’m particularly grateful to those, who generously donated their time and materials free of charge, and to Peter Gibbs and Linda Knott for their efforts in making this happen – we really appreciate it.

“We’re excited to see this lovely design and verse bring joy to our lake for years to come.”
