A Vision Realised in the 1920s
Clevedon Marine Lake has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the 1920s. It was officially opened on March 30th 1929 thanks to the hard work and support of Councillor Frederick Robert Nutting, as a purpose-built tidal lake, created to provide safe sea swimming for the people of Clevedon and visitors to the area.
At the time, sea bathing was becoming increasingly popular, and the lake offered a safe and accessible alternative to swimming in the open Bristol Channel, with its strong currents and tidal range. Built on the site of an earlier Victorian swimming area, the lake was designed to fill naturally with each high tide, refreshing the water and making it a unique facility of its kind.

The Lake’s Victorian Glory Days
Clevedon Marine Lake was lavishly equipped with a timber clubhouse and changing-room, high diving and springboards, a bathing raft, deckchairs, a row of bathing huts and a bandstand – and remained a much loved, Victorian seaside attraction until visitor numbers declined in the 1970s.

The Rise of MARLENS and the Lake’s Revival
Over the decades, Clevedon Marine Lake became a beloved community asset, hosting countless family outings, swimming galas, and community events. However, by the early 2000s, the lake had fallen into disrepair due to a lack of funding and maintenance. Recognising its importance to the town, a group of dedicated local residents led by Councillor Arthur Knott, who was also Clevedon Sailing Club’s Cadet Officerformed the charity MARLENS (Marine Lake Enthusiasts) to save and restore the lake.
A major turning point came in 2014, when MARLENS secured a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and received additional financial support from North Somerset Council and the local community. This funding allowed for a major refurbishment project, which included desilting the lake, repairing the walls, and improving access and safety features. The revitalisation sparked renewed interest in the lake, restoring it to its former glory and ensuring its use for generations to come.
Celebrating Community and Continuing the Legacy
Throughout its history, Clevedon Marine Lake has hosted many memorable events – from large-scale swimming challenges to community festivals. One of our most loved annual events is the spectacular ‘’Light up the Lake’’ which brings the community together in celebration with illuminated paddleboards, music, and entertainment.
Today, the lake continues to thrive as a centre for wellbeing, recreation, and community spirit, thanks to its historic legacy and the tireless efforts of the MARLENS charity and volunteers.
